Why would a church buy a cinema?
When we were looking for a building to purchase for our church in 2023. The Gawler cinemas was up for sale.
We fell in love with the building and we loved the idea of keeping the cinema operating for the community. We knew it would be a big challenge after Covid and also after the business not operating for nearly a year.
So we took a big step, raised half the money from our own members and bought it! We reopened it as a not for profit, community cinema and we operate with a huge team of volunteers. We absolutely love running the cinema and getting to know the local community.
We believe in the power of community, and the need for people to have places to be with others. Being open largely for retired people during the day, tues-fri, for families all through the school holidays and on 2 Friday nights a month, we are keeping this building open to the public.
We are also very proud to have our own recycled clothing store, Curate. This is a collection of clothing put together by a group of volunteers who are passionate about recycled clothing. The proceeds go back to the cinema to help cover operating costs.
As local Gawler people, we are proud to keep this tradition alive and we are very grateful to John and Joy for the amazing service they offered the Gawler community for so many years.
At Gawler Cinema, we take pride in delivering exceptional service to our patrons.
