Lew Wray says “You Must See It”
One of our patrons Lew Wray saw THE LAST JOURNEY on Friday April 4th and was so impressed he wants everyone to know about the film. So i asked him to share his thoughts with our community.
THE LAST JOURNEY returns to GAWLER CINEMA after the school holidays, from APRIL 29 to MAY 7. Below is Lew’s review so you know what to expect.
A BEAUTIFUL MOVIE
Don’t be put off by the title. It is not a self-indulgent road movie, it is not a typical documentary, nor is it a morbid ‘end of life’ movie. It is one of the best movies I have ever seen. It involves a real journey on which Filip Hammar drives his ageing father, Lars, to France, re-creating past family holidays.
Filip and his friend Fredrik are experienced journalists and filmmakers. Lars is a much-loved school teacher now retired and aged 80. His family is concerned that Lars has lost his spark of life, has no interests, and just sits in a chair. He cannot walk without assistance.
In the extensive credits there is no mention of a script writer. There is no script, as the main characters are the actual people being themselves, then re-living their past experiences. They are not acting, they are not speaking invented dialogue.
The journey through France is through delightful scenery and includes many delightful happenings and interactions between Lars and Filip, especially Filip’s love and care for his father and his special needs.
Various scenes in the movie seemed to be real scenes from the past, perhaps with some embellishment. Although this is not a comedy, there are many amusing situations and plenty of humorous interaction between the characters.
Another feature of the movie is the music, some of it written specially. It enhances the movie but never intrudes.
I usually check my watch during movies to see how long to go and then trying to work out the plot in the time left. I didn’t look at my watch once.
Overall, it is a thoroughly delightful movie, including subtle life lessons.
YOU MUST SEE IT.
