Freedom of Media...
The Australian made film THE CORRESPONDENT is based on the true events of journalist Peter Greste and his imprisonment in Egypt.
I was lucky enough to be at the world premiere of this film back in October at the 2024 ADELAIDE FILM FESTIVAL.
The exceptional screenplay based on Peter's memoir indispurses reflections on a secondary true story of a trip of his to Mogadishu. We know the positive outcome for the Egyptian situation (Peter Greste was sitting in the theatre with us) but throughout the film we learn of the terrible injustices, the politics, the near hopelessness of the experience. It truley is an impressive piece of work.
Richard Roxborough is often unrecognisable and his expertise shone through every scene. There were really interesting editing choices made for scenes that could have been long and tedious given the circumstances, by blocking silent scenes with voices over the top from later conversations.
It's an important story, looking at freedom of speech for the media and giving it the ability to show both sides of a circumstance hopefully with little bias. As a Christian i too can only hope that the freedom of speech needed to share my faith can continue to be achieved without fear of retribution.
